After a bit more investigation, it turns out it's not that its typed in 
a workspace, but that the syntax is wrong.  (help "author) or (help 
author) crash it whether it's in a workspace or the repl.  sorry for the 
mis-info.  it's not that terribly important, but new users might find it 
frustrating to bomb a lot, esp. if they dont know why.

a guess, but i'd suspect it's a standard mac PLT Scheme addition, as
"PLT Games" has a prefs dialogue that says "there are no prefs, this is
just a test for macos".. +)
