i remember i had very serious perfomance issues on a radeon 7500 with
the open source driver when drawing transparent lines a few years ago.
since the font is drawn using transparent lines now, it is possible that
this causes the problem. you can test it by commenting out the body of
void PolyGlyph::RenderOutline in PolyGlyph.cpp.
