We connected plants to fluxus while doing the groworld project, there is
some code (scm and pde) here:

It's reading from the serial port and sending messages on to xmpp
(jabber) which you can strip out.

It's basically just:

(define serial (open-input-file "/dev/tty.usbserial-A9007Lgy"))

Which you need to point at the serial device you can find in the
processing ide, and reading it with:

(read-line serial)
