Well, I have this problem with my laptop, which has one of these
chipsets abandoned by ati. I keep an old version of ubuntu intrepid on a
partition for doing gigs, as the ati driver works with it - but day to
day I use karmic (puredyne) with the open source driver.
To give you some idea it runs generally at around 30% the speed of the
ati one in general fluxus use, and has no features like shaders. It's ok
for a lot of what I'm doing at the moment, and the free software drivers
are getting much better - but I will need to buy a new laptop soon
because of this.
And I wont be using ati again.
cheers,
dave
