yeah i too have never been able to get the configuration check working 
totally right - if i know the stuff is there I generally comment out the 
checks (bad eh!).

As for the compiler spew - it definitely looks like a compiler being 
(overly?) strict with casts. Also what version of guile are you 
compiling against? Could the `scm_from_locale_string' undeclared error 
could be down to a version mismatch?
