soft-ware: Realtime Animation
with {invisible chainsaws[1]}
Workshop: 13-17 December 2005, lead by Dave Griffiths and Nik Gaffney
Animation has a long and convoluted tradition, often being associated with
both the magical and mechanical arts. Nowadays, we can experiment with this
magic in real-time, using computers as highly dynamic, reconfigurable
animation machines. Real-time animation is able to converse with the world
outside its boundaries, by visually responding to changes in sound, motion,
electro-magnetic resonance or even sweat and blood. A world of forms
continuously generated, animated and rendered, where the unexpected sprouts
into existence under the fingers of skilled coders-animators-performers.
Images that can take a life of their own, moving from static to dynamic,
form becoming growth.
This workshop will introduce 'fluxus'[2] as a programming and performing
environment for real-time animation. We will cover a range of animation
techniques, from basic geometry, motion, texturing and compositing to more
advanced topics including simulations of physical systems [real or
imagined], interfacing with sensors and actuators, along with using audio
and network data. The participants will learn how to make inanimate bits
become animated and potentially life-like, able to mutate and grow through
continuous successions of change...
[1] "Live coding is not about tools. Algorithms are thoughts. Chainsaws are
tools. That's why algorithms are sometimes harder to notice than chainsaws."

The workshop will take place at the FoAM lab > Koolmijnenkaai 30-34 Quai des
Charbonnages, 1080 Brussels, Belgium
If you would like to participate, please reply to this mail before the 21st
of November, along with a brief bio and a short statement outlining your
interest in realtime animation.
Soft-ware: Realtime Animation is a part of the .x-med-k. series of
workshops, organised by Nadine, 0kn0 and FoAM.
